DEADLY YELLOWJACKET STINGS – UPDATED SPRING ’11

Updated  as of  April 17, 2011

As many as 100 people will die this year from yellowjacket stings.  Even if you have been stung in the past and suffered no ill effects, it is not a guarantee that you will not suffer a bad reaction in the future.

I have written about  my yellowjacket encounters in the past.  My original post can be read here.

My experienced began on a beautiful summer evening in ’08 when I was suddenly attacked by yellowjackets.  There was no warning or indication of what was about to happen.  Although I had been stung in the past, I had never experienced a severe reaction. This time was different.

What happened in ’09 was even more severe than the year before.  My body’s reaction to the stings was swift and immediate. I barely made it into the house;  911 had to called.  I cannot forget the feeling of suddenly losing control of my body  or the  felling of  helpless of something beyond my control.  I will always have to keep an Epi Pen nearby during the months when yellowjackets reappear.

Summer is a time for picnics in the back yard, at the beach, etc. and these critters are always around…usually near the food and drinks. Yellowjackets take no prisons, unlike bees, they can sting repeatedly. Don’t let your family and friends fall victim.

Be pro-active and consider these recommendations:

  • Start looking for nests now, before they establish themselves. Once established, they are very difficult to get rid of.  I had a professional treat the area four times with different kinds of insecticide eradicators, including a “natural” one that had little effect.  It wouldn’t be a bad idea to check your lawn and yard every so often throughout the spring & summer months.
  • What am I looking for?  The signs of any swarming activity with insects flying in and out or seeming to disappear into the ground.  This is from Ohio State University:

Life Cycle and Habits

Yellowjackets are social wasps living in colonies containing workers, queens and males. Colonies are annual with only inseminated queens overwintering. Fertilized queens occur in protected places as hollow logs, in stumps, under bark, in leaf litter, in soil cavities and human-made structures. Queens emerge during the warm days of late April or early May, select a nest site and build a small paper nest in which eggs are laid. After eggs hatch from the 30 to 50 brood cells, the queen feeds the young larvae for about 18 to 20 days. Larvae pupate, emerging later as small, infertile females called workers. By mid-June, the first adult workers emerge and assume the tasks of nest expansion, foraging for food, care of the queen and larvae, and colony defense. From this time until her death in the autumn, the queen remains inside the nest laying eggs. The colony then expands rapidly reaching a maximum size of 4,000 to 5,000 workers and a nest of 10,000 to 15,000 cells in August and late September. At peak size, reproductive cells are built with new males and queens produced. Adult reproductives remain in the nest fed by the workers. New queens build up fat reserves to overwinter. Adult reproductives leave the parent colony to mate. After mating, males quickly die while fertilized queens seek protected places to overwinter.

  • Remember, yellowjackets normally build nests underground; so look at the base of trees, under piles of pine straw and bushes that provide protection.  They can build nests in your lawn.  There are hundreds of stories of people getting stung while mowing their lawns.  They can also build nests in odd places, including the inside of a home. There’s an on line video of just such a nest.
  • Invest in some traps.  I place yellowjacket traps in my front and back yards. I have successfully use a product called  WHY (wasps, hornets, yellowjackets) from Rescue.  This product works and the earlier you get it out the better. Remember you want to take down the Queen before the colony gets established.  More info here.
  • Review the information provided in this post and elsewhere.  In particular go the Epi Pen website and educate yourself and your family.  There is an excellent video on how to use the Epi Pen and many associates topics and issues.
  • INFORM OTHERS – Share this information with family and friends.  This could be in the form of an email, or you could ask to have a mention of this in your school bulletin,  or church bulletin (or other place of worship) and where you work.  Tell others, you could save someone’s life.

DEADLY YELLOW JACKET STINGS

What do yellow jacket stings have to do with politics, Hillary Clinton, Obama, Imus, etc.?

Not a darn thing, but I was severely stung by them on Friday and I feel compelled to relay the experience to anyone that can hear me. Every once in a while, there is something that happens in life that is more important than politics and the Election.

Passing on this information that could save a life . . . yours, or someone you know OR LOVE.

Now that I’ve got your attention, here goes . . .

Friday evening I was stung twice by yellow jackets and suffered a very severe reaction. The paramedics had to called. Luckily someone was with me when this happened because I was incapable of calling 911 myself. When I collapsed , I thought it was “curtains” for a time there.

One way I have been coping with the enormity of this was thinking about those old Columbo TV shows (Agatha Christie novels or Poirot mystery stories) where people meet their demise in odd ways. You see the bee enter the room and you already know someone’s going to be a goner.

There is nothing funny about yellow jacket stings. Close to 100 people will die from insect stings this year. One sting can be fatal to certain allergic people. You only need to stung once to suffer ill effects! Each sting should be taken seriously. That doesn’t mean panicking every time someone is stung. It does mean, staying calm and knowing how to respond to the situation.

People need to know how serious bee/yellow jacket stings can be. Once a person has been stung these critters may sting you again in the future . I can attest to that, having been stung 10 or 12 times over the years. Each time my reaction to the stings has become more severe.

BTW, bees and yellow jackets are not the same. Bees will generally not attack first. Also, the earth is losing its bee population and that’s important to know because without bees growing food becomes tenuous. We need helpful bees to pollinate our crops etc.

Ten days ago I stung one evening. I thought it was a fluke, but when I was attacked, again, on Friday night I knew something was dreadfully wrong.

Turns out there was a nest of the suckers in my back yard, and as I found out these guys are very aggressive . . . and aggressive just for the hell of it. They will attack for no reason. Apparently, I was too near their nest. BTW, yellow jackets make their nests in the ground near tree roots, which I didn’t know until the exterminator told me . They can also build their nests in lawns, under pine straw, in the ground etc.

Stings can be deadly if people don’t know how to react after being stung. For starters, many people get stung and never suffer any consequences, but for those who do, its important to remember to call 911 if there is any indication of a bad reaction. Don’t even consider driving to the hospital there may not be enough time. This cannot be emphasized enough.

From the time I was stung until the first wave of dizziness, nausea, loss of control of my body functions (yes loss of bodily functions, I won’t go into detail) was probably less than 5 or 6 minutes. I completely collapsed. Some people go into shock, suffer rapid pulse, and cannot breathe. The paramedics were great. When 911 knew they were responding to a bee sting and my condition, they were here FAST!

The reason I’m going into such detail is because I feel like this is an urgent message I have get out to other people and quickly. It’s like the Universe is telling me to, “move on this pronto! Somebody out there needs to know this.” And, so I am.

It bears repeating, if stung, get ice on the affected area right away to try to control the swelling, put Caladryl or other antiseptic on the sting. It wouldn’t hurt to have Benadryl in the house or liquid dye-free allergy medication in the house at all times. This can be purchased at CVS etc. and is faster acting than the pills. Both are antihistamines that will help with the after effects of the sting . . . burning, itching, etc.

If the person stung starts to get hives or begins to have difficulty breathing, stay calm, and call 911.

PLEASE FELL FREE TO SEND THIS MESSAGE TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW . . . IT MAY SAVE SOMEONE’S LIFE.

There’s PS on this. Swelling, itching, etc. can get really bad for some people. Soaking the affected area (s) in Epsom salts will help. It may require a visit to your physician who may prescribe steroids and other meds to help make your life bearable.

Because my reaction was so severe, I will need to keep an EpiPen with me at all times when there is a chance of being stung . . . like all summer! The EpiPen is a pre-measured shot of epinephrine that is used to prevent a person from going into anaphylactic shock. You need a prescription from a doctor to get an EpiPen.

REVOLVER

In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

George Orwell.

besides…

Herman Cain can become the Peoples President. Unlike Obama, Cain’s grassroots support is real not manufactured.

THE PEOPLES PRESIDENT 2012

Herman Cain crushed the so-called first tier candidates Mitt Romney (aka mittens) and Rick Perry in yesterday’s Florida straw poll. Cain’s win is important enough to bring international interest, with the International Business Times calling it a new race.

Surprise, surprise. surprise, (not!) the Sunday talk shows are chattering about Cain defeating Romney and Perry in the Florida straw poll.

What is left unsaid is that the real surprise to them is that the voters are not following the MSM & GOP elites narrative on who is likely to run against the fraud Obama.

Their narrative has no room for Herman Cain and so they barely/rarely cover him. Why bring attention to a man who can really turn this country around, right? And so they speak his name in whispers or not at all! All of that changed yesterday.

One of the lessons to be learned in the 2012 election is name recognition isn’t everything. It’s the message that counts! Simply put so even a Progressive “journalist” can understand, the truth will out!

What the GOP elites and the MSM fail to realize, is that they have made themselves increasingly irrelevant to the voters of America. They are as tone deaf to the voters as Obama is to capitalism.

A Cain victory over Obama is payback by the Birthers and independents for the GOP’s failure to tell the truth about Obama’s ineligibility. It is payback for knowingly leading the nation astray. Obama’s a fake and everyone knows it, with the possible exception of the most rabid Obots.

Even worse than Obama’s fraudulent presidency (Born a Brit, not Legit) has been his clear inability to perform the tasks at hand. BHO likes the pomp and circumstance. but the work needed to truly be the POTUS. God, he is such a waste, such an empty suit!

Unlike Romney (picked by Rove) and Perry (said to be NWO), Cain is not a  bought man, and that boys ‘n girls is like a breath of fresh air.  Unlike Obama, Cain thankfully is not a Progressive!

Over at American Thinker the question was posed, “Is the Cain win an anyone but Romney vote?”  I think not. Cain is the real deal, and he’s Obama’s worst nightmare!

OBAMA BORN A BRIT NOT LEGIT
Let's be clear. The eligibility requirement for POTUS is natural born citizen, not naturalized citizen, not native born citizen, not citizen of the United States.
Each type of citizenship has a legal definition and is very specific despite the attempts by Team Obama, the co-conspirators in the judiciary, Congress, and the MSM to conflate the terms and bastardize the Presidency.
